<p>Another type of event or occurrence you can tie into is the annual celebration or commemoration.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve probably seen or heard the announcements about such things as National Dairy Month, which happens in June,  or the Great American Smoke-out.</p>
<p>Such events or themes are often created by trade associations or non-profits to create awareness and to motivate people to certain actions, such as drinking more milk or stopping the cigarette  habit.</p>
<p>There are literally hundreds of such awareness programs occurring each year.  If you find a way to tie your product or service into  one of them, as they occur, you greatly increase your chances of getting free publicity. One way is to create an event of your own that reflects the theme of the celebration.</p>
<p>But how do I find out what they are, you may ask.</p>
<p>Good question.  One site is the <a href="http://ow.ly/9x16">ePromos Events Calendar</a><br />
You can find others on the web.</p>
<p>Look at the listings and think about what events might be appropriate for you.  Send your press release out at least a couple weeks before the event.</p>
<p>So next time you want a little  fame, think milk. Or candy. National Candy Month occurs in June also.</p>

<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;"><em>Median price a year ago, six months ago<br style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0;" /></em></p>

<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;"><em>Number of years in business<br style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0;" /></em></p>
<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;"><em>If you own the comapny, the number of agents</em></p>
<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;">You get the idea.</p>
<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;">Journalists love a well thought out fact sheet because it makes their job so much easier.</p>
<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;">So consider adding a fact sheet to your press kit and watch your media exposure grow.</p>
<p style="border-width:0;margin:0;padding:0 0 18px;">Or as they often said on the old policeTV show<em> Dragnet</em> (I&#8217;ve been wanting to write this since I started the article), &#8220;Just the facts, ma&#8217;am.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I often help people become guests on radio talk shows. Radio is a great way to promote your business, cause or organization, without leaving home. Most talk radio shows will interview  you on the phone. You can do it in your bunny slippers. Not that I wear bunny slippers.  Honest.</p>
<p>Last year, several of the people I was working with, or considering working with,  told me they did not want to appear on  podcasts or radio shows broadcast on the Internet. Their perception was that these shows have small audiences and would therefore be a waste of time. At one time, this may  have been true.</p>
<p>However,  the Internet is rapidly changing and I believe the value of being a guest on these shows is greater than ever and can, in many ways, eclipse the value of appearing on traditional broadcast radio. Not that I want to demean the value of traditional radio talk shows.  They can be an important part of any publicity campaign. It&#8217;s just that they have new competition, which offers you more opportunities to promote yourself.</p>

<p>Here are 10 reasons why I think you should consider being interviewed on Internet radio shows:</p>
<p>1. Model successful people.   One of the keys to success is to do what successful people do. It&#8217;s called modeling. Many celebrities, including best-selling authors, are guests on these shows.  If they think it&#8217;s worth their time, maybe it&#8217;s worth yours, as well.</p>
<p>2. These shows have loyal listeners. They listen actively to the shows, which are promoted ahead of time.  These listeners want to hear what the guest has to say.  In traditional radio talk shows, people are often doing other things &#8212; driving somewhere, making dinner, etc. You may  have only their partial attention, which means only a small part of your message is heard and even less is acted upon. Even worse, some in the audience may have no interest at all in your topic.  They may be a fan of the host and are merely tolerating you.</p>
<p>3.  It&#8217;s great practice. You can make your mistakes in front of a smaller audience while you build your interview skills.</p>
<p>4. It&#8217;s a great showcase.  You have something to add to the media page on your website and promotional materials. Also, you have samples for bigger radio shows, and TV talk shows and news broadcasts. Before they will consider booking you, they want to hear what  you can do.</p>
<p>5. They have longevity. Although many broadcast shows archive their episodes on the net, many don&#8217;t. And those that do usually keep them for a limited time. Podcasts are often archived for years.</p>
<p>6. Convenience &#8212; People can listen to the shows whenever they want, not just when the show is broadcast. This actually increases the size of the audience.</p>
<p>7.  Searchable &#8212; These shows are searchable by key words, which again means you are being heard by people who want to listen to what you have to say.</p>
<p>8. Serendipity &#8212; You don&#8217;t know who might be a fan of the show. A book publisher may like your message and offer you a book deal.  You might be offered a speaking gig by a listener. You might establish an ongoing relationship with the host that can be mutually beneficial.</p>
<p>9.  Some have big audiences. &#8212; Yes, there are many Internet shows that have over 100,000 listeners all over the world.  Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice to have an international reputation.</p>
<p>10.  It can be fun.  Promoting yourself doesn&#8217;t always have to be hard work. I&#8217;ve had a great time on many of the shows I&#8217;ve been on, promoting my book. And what&#8217;s wrong with a little fun, especially in these times?</p>

<p>You can buy media lists from these companies online or you can use the hard copy directories in the reference area of most libraries. One caution: many libraries have editions that are more than a year old.  Because journalists tend to be a nomadic lot, some of the info in the hard copy directories will be out of date, the older the edition, the more inaccurate. But at least these books will give you the basic info you need to start your search and build your media contacts lists.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the many problems created by the economic downturn is that support for charities declines, both in terms of donations and volunteerism. </p>
<p>One way to get Free Publicity is to help a charity.  It gives you three opportunities to send a press release to the media.</p>
<p>Announce what you&#8217;re going to do.</p>
<p>Tell the world what you&#8217;re doing it as you do it.</p>
<p>Follow up by letting the world know what you did &#8212; raised X number of dollars, cleaned up a park, fed hungry people etc.</p>
<p>Yes, it can be a little self-serving, but people in need don&#8217;t really care what your motivation is. They need help and they need it now.</p>
<p>And who knows?  Reading about your good works may just inspire others to do the same.</p>
<p>So please consider helping a worthy organization.  It will improve your image and help make a small part of this troubled planet just a little better.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you want free publicity, you&#8217;re going to have to deal with journalists.  So you might as well learn how to communicate with them.</p>
<p>Every profession has its jargon and journalism is no exception.  If you learn some of the basic terms you will be able to communicate more efficiently and effectively with journalist.  They will appreciate it and it will save both of you time.</p>
<p>Learning some of their lingo also indicates that you understand something about their industry.  This can sometimes cause them to respect you more, if only on a subconscious level, and increase their receptivity to you.</p>
<p>Here are some of the basic terms:</p>
<p>Slug or slug line &#8212; a few words at the top of each page that identify the story.  Before the advent of computers and email, when people actually used ancient relics known ad typewriters,  news stories were written on paper.</p>
<p>No, really.</p>
<p>The same slug was put on each typewritten page of the story, with the page number, so that if the pages were separated they could be put back together in the proper order.  With the advent of email, the slug now only appears once, at the top of the story.</p>
<p>Byline &#8212; the name of the person who wrote the story.  Press releases do not have bylines.</p>
<p>Headline &#8212; if you&#8217;ve ever read a newspaper, you know what this is.</p>
<p>Dateline &#8212; the city where the person or entity that the story is about is located, often followed by the date.  The dateline appears at the beginning of the first paragraph followed by a dash and then the lead.</p>
<p>Graph &#8212; short for paragraph.  Journalists usually refer to graphs, not paragraphs.</p>
<p>Copy &#8212; the words of the story.</p>
<p>Cutline &#8212; also known as the caption.  These are words that appear beneath or near a photo that explain it or offer more information.</p>
<p>Hard news &#8212; stories about crime, politics, war, the economy, etc.  Hard news is usually reported while an event is happening or shortly after.</p>
<p>Features &#8212; these can be human-interest stories, such as a couple celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary, or a kid who nurses sick animals back to health, etc.  Features can also be informational pieces on a variety of topics, such as health, personal finances, and so on.  A feature can also be a more in-depth look at a news story.  The timing of a feature is less important than for a hard news story.</p>
<p>Evergreen &#8212; usually a feature that can be published or broadcast at any time that is convenient for the news outlet.  An evergreen story is also one that is done repeatedly through the years.  On holidays, for example, you will see evergreen stories.  For example, at Christmas, you will see stories about organizations that raise food, clothes or toys for needy people.  On the 4th of July, you&#8217;ll see stories of immigrants who recently became citizens.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Video new releases (VNRs) are designed to look like real news.  Businesses, nonprofits, and government organizations create these video segments that TV news outlets often use on their broadcasts.  Footage for VNRs might be of an event, a product or a place, such as a resort or restaurant, or an interview.  They contain all of the elements of a written news release in visual form and are meant to be used as a complete story.  Although the VNR usually has its own voice over (narration), the TV reporter will often leave it out and do her own voice over.<br />
TV news outlets like VNRs because they help fill airtime without the time and cost of sending a reporter and crew out to shoot the footage and do an interview.<br />
A B-roll is a series of short clips that a journalist can insert into a news story. For example, if a TV reporter does an interview with the CEO of a hospital, their PR team might give the reporter footage of the exterior of the building, the emergency room, or some of the labs, etc, in no particular sequence.<br />
If your budget allows, providing video to a TV news outlet can be a great way to increase your chances of getting coverage.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In many communities, the cable TV providers must offer what is frequently called local access or public access.<span>  </span>This means they have their own local studios that community members can use to produce shows, which are broadcast on a local cable channel.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In order to produce a show, the cable company will usually require that you take their course on television production, usually offered for free or at a nominal charge. <span> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Most people find these courses a lot of fun.<span>  </span>When you’re done, you can be a producer.<span>   </span>Not every graduate of the course wants to produce their own show, which takes a lot of work, but most are willing to volunteer on other people’s shows, operating cameras and such.<span>  </span>That’s how most local access shows are produced.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The ideas for shows are endless.<span>  </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">If you own a gym you could have your own exercise show.<span> I</span>f you have a restaurant, you could put on a cooking show. If you&#8217;re an expert on cars, you could show people how to maintain them.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">What are you an expert on?  What are you passionate about?  These can make great topics for your own local show.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Is there a cause you want to support?  Maybe you could make a documentary.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The key to success is to make your shows informative and entertaining. And non-commercial. Most cable companies will not allow  you to make this a profit-seeking venture.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Producing your own show and appearing in front of the camera can prepare you to appear on broadcast TV shows in two ways.<span> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>First, you get to practice in front of the camera.  When you watch your show, it gives you valuable feedback on how you come across. It gives you the opportunity to adjust your style before trying to become a guest on other, larger shows.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Second, you have footage to send to larger TV shows so they can see you in action. You have a (demo) &#8220;reel&#8221; as they say in the biz.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">So if you&#8217;re looking for a way to get a lot more positive publicity, be the star of your own show.</p>
